Andersen Bjornstad Kane originates as a partnership of Arthur Andersen, Trygve Bjornstad, and Thomas Kane in Seattle in 1956. The firm’s early work focuses on designing dozens of local schools, Pacific Northwest Bell buildings, and most of the radio relay towers in Washington state.
Andersen Bjornstad Kane receives the first Excellence in Engineering Top Honor Award from the Consulting Engineers Council of Washington for its work on the Boeing Space Simulation Laboratory. It also receives the Grand Award from the American Consulting Engineers Council for the top engineering project in the nation.
Andersen Bjornstad Kane merges with Huseby and Jacobs, a consulting engineering firm in Anchorage, Alaska, to establish one of the strongest building structural engineering firms in the Northwest. The new firm is incorporated as Andersen Bjornstad Kane Jacobs. The Prudhoe Bay ARCO Operations Center receives the Grand Award from the American Consulting Engineers Council for the top engineering project in the nation.
ABKJ grows into transportation design work with the landmark West Seattle High Level Bridge project. The firm is a major player in the expanding Alaska market, designing the majority of the high-rise structures in Anchorage. ABKJ starts work on its first structure on the Microsoft World Campus in Redmond, Washington. The Main Bay Hatchery project receives the Grand Award from the American Consulting Engineers Council for the top engineering project in the nation.
ABKJ merges with Arnold, Arnold & Associates to strengthen the ABKJ bridge and transportation department and complement the firm's structural engineering services. The West Seattle Swing Bridge project receives Grand Awards for Engineering Excellence from the American Consulting Engineers Council and the Consulting Engineers Council of Washington for the top engineering project in the nation.
ABKJ continues to shape the look of the Pacific Northwest with several landmark high-rise structures and medical facilities, including Lincoln Square, the University of Washington William H. Foege Building that houses the Bioengineering and Genome Sciences laboratories, and the University of Washington Surgery Pavilion. The firm expands its transportation department by introducing environmental services.
ABKJ expands its international market with such projects as the OQYANA Resort in Dubai, the Konstellation Center in Russia, and the Sankara Nethralaya Eye Hospital in India. To meet the demands of this growing market, the firm opens the ABKJ Infrastructure and Design Solutions office in Bangalore, India.
